Pre-teen Hospitalized After Skateboarding Fall
A 12-year-old was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to a Children's Hospital Boston Wednesday evening.
A 12-year-old Holliston girl was flown to Children's Hospital Boston with a head injury after falling off her skateboard on Arch Street Wednesday night, Fire Chief Michael Cassidy said.
The Holliston Police, ambulance and paramedics from Events EMS responded to Arch Street at 7:45 p.m. after receiving word that a girl had fallen off her skateboard. After evaluating the victim, members of the HFD ambulance crew requested a helicopter her to a trauma center.
At 8:31 p.m., Boston MedFlight 2 arrived at the landing zone at Stoddard Park, which had been secured by Cassidy and Engine 2. Twenty minutes later, the girl was taken to Children’s Hospital by the MedFlight helicopter.
Following the incident, Cassidy emphasized that the patient’s injuries could have been more significant had she not been wearing a helmet. He pointed to statistics from the Safe Kids Worldwide website, which says that in 2009, there were an estimated 74,841 injuries to children involving skateboards.
Cassidy further said that helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and severe brain injury by 88 percent.
“This is a poignant reminder for all parents of the importance of children wearing an approved and properly-fitted helmet any time they are involved in wheeled sporting activities,” said Cassidy.
